SNU's Melvin Perry – Southern Nazarene University Leadership Spotlight
Setting goals for one’s self is important, especially if your goals include climbing the administration ladder in the public school system. For Melvin Perry, the Director of Personnel and Finance for Crutcho Public Schools, completing his Master’s in Educational Leadership program at Southern Nazarene University will help him reach his professional goals as an educator.
“My future goal is to become a superintendent of a school district. This program will most definitely help me accomplish this goal once I’ve completed the program in December of 2021,” said Perry. “SNU was the right school for me because they offered a one night per week program to complete the Master of Educational Leadership program. I have two children and would not have been able to attend school two nights per week to obtain my masters. I received my bachelor’s degree from SNU, and they have an overall family environment that I believe was necessary for me.”
Getting to know the professors and other students has been very enjoyable for Perry.
“What I have enjoyed the most about my time in the SNU MAEL program is building professional relationships with our instructors who are current district administrators across the metro area and the state,” said Perry.
There are many reasons Perry felt he would recommend this course to others looking to add that important piece of the puzzle to their resume. One includes the instructors and the feedback you receive.
“What stands out me about this program is that local superintendents and district administrators would be the instructors teaching the classes. What I enjoyed about that is students have the ability to ask firsthand questions and get feedback on what’s currently going on in the profession,” said Perry. “The advice that I would give someone considering continuing their education is this: if you want to be a school or school district administrator, SNU has the best program in the state. With all the resources and supports that the program offers, you have no reason not to be successful with graduating the program and finding a job.”
Away from his duties at school and his classwork, Perry enjoys traveling and spending time with family and friends. Most of his time is spent with his two boys.
