Oscar Sanchez says it has taken a lot of work for him to get to where he is.

“For me to be successful in soccer, I have had to put in a lot of practice time,” he said. “Also, there is a lot of trial and error and learning from past mistakes. Most of all, you have to be willing to do whatever it takes to get where you want to be.”

Oscar is a junior at Moore High School. He plays midfield for the Lions soccer team. He is fairly new to playing soccer as he has only been playing competitively for about three years.

There are several people who have served as role models for Sanchez.

“Big role models for me are players like Belgian soccer standout Kevin De Bruyne,” Sanchez says. “I like how he passes and he is a good playmaker. Also, my coaches have taught me so much and made a big impact on me. Another person that has influenced my life is my English teacher from my freshman year, Mrs. Harkey. She was always nice and supportive of me playing soccer.”

The work that he has put in has not left Oscar empty-handed. He was named Offensive Player of the Year for the Lions’ soccer team during his freshman year.

Sheldon Spelman, boys soccer head coach at Moore, says that Sanchez is a great player because of the work he is willing to put in.

“Oscar is a prime example of what’s possible through hard work,” Spelman said. “He’s developed all the qualities you look for in a modern midfielder and is a leader for us by example.”

Outside of school soccer, Sanchez plays for the Cosmos, a club soccer team. He hopes to play soccer after he graduates from high school.

“My dream is to make it to play soccer at the next level,” he said. “I am hoping to get a scholarship to play collegiate soccer.”
