Bethel Wildcats - 2020 Basketball Preview Feature - Presented by BancFirst Shawnee
Coach: Eric Litherland
2019-20 Record: 19-8
Head coach Eric Litherland will implement an up-tempo style of basketball this season thanks to a good mixture of athletic and skilled players. “Last year in the back half of the year we finished on a 15-4 run,” said Litherland. “That included wins over No.1 ranked Dale and wins over ranked teams such as Tecumseh, Mount St. Mary, Vanoss, Vian and Valliant. Our guys began the process of learning how to win and never looked back. We got to the second round of area and with our returning scorers from last year, I believe we will have a chance to be in the mix this year.” Drae Wood (6-2, Sr.) may be the team’s best athlete. Last season he averaged 10.8 points, 5.0 rebounds and 2.8 assists. John Gordon (6-3, Jr.) is another scoring machine. Gordon averaged on the season 11.1 points, 5.5 rebounds and 1.2 assists. He finished the year averaging 17.5 ppg a game. Gage Porter (5-10, Jr.) is clutch with the ball. Porter accounted for 9.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 1.5 assists. Also look for Jesse Tucker (6-0, Sr.), a solid athlete and forward that can average 7.4 points per contest. D.J. Whitten (6-0, So.) could be the underclassmen to watch this season. Whitten averaged 2.5 points a game but has the potential to be much more prolific with his shooting. SOMETHING TO WATCH – Gordon has the potential to become a superstar this season. As a sophomore everything started to click late in the season. If that winner mentality is back, Gordon could be next to unstoppable as a junior.
